KUALA LUMPUR, Friday, 10 March 2017 – BIMB Investment Management Berhad (“BIMB Invest”) continues its partnership with global asset manager, Arabesque Asset Management Holding Ltd, UK (“Arabesque Partners”) to launch the BIMB-Arabesque Malaysia Shariah-ESG Equity Fund (“the Fund”); a Shariah and Environmental, Social and Governance (“ESG”) compliant fund that invests in Malaysian listed companies using artificial intelligence technology.

Encik Khairul Kamarudin, Chairman of BIMB Invest today officially launched the Fund alongside BIMB Invest’s Chief Executive Officer (“CEO”), Encik Najmuddin Mohd Lutfi.

Encik Khairul Kamarudin said, “BIMB Invest has recalibrated its investment processes and strategy by adopting Financial Technology (“FinTech”) in its funds portfolio construction and management, while integrating both Shariah values and ESG principles in its investment process and philosophy.”

He added, “The firm has rebranded and redefined its value propositions to investors as a Shariah-ESG fund house with its partnership with Arabesque Partners. This partnership offers the next generation of investment management solutions to retail and institutional investors that are transparent, robust in risk management and sustainable in investment performance. In the last three years, BIMB Invest’s asset under management (“AUM”) had grown at a compounded annual growth rate of 12.54% with the current year to date AUM of RM1.1 billion“.

Encik Najmuddin Mohd Lutfi said, “The BIMB-Arabesque Malaysia Shariah-ESG Equity fund is suitable for investors who are seeking exposure to Shariah and ESG-compliant Malaysian stocks, as well as capital appreciation over medium to long term period. Investors with moderate to high risk tolerance and medium to long term investment horizon may find this Shariah-compliant investment an offer that should not be missed. It is alternative to savings, a financial instrument to help one’s investment plan for the future. The fund invests up to 100 stocks with minimum investment of only RM500 at a price of 25 sen per unit. The fund is available at all 145 Bank Islam branches nationwide and through BIMB Invest consultants starting 9 March 2017. The fund is also available online at”

The Fund aims to enhance investment returns over the benchmark by incorporating material sustainability data (ESG). The investment portfolio, which is rebalanced monthly, reviews each stock’s risk/return profile by assessing multiple non-financial and financial factors. This structured and disciplined process of stock selection through quantitative analysis and algorithms has been built to construct a portfolio for optimal investment performance that is relative to the risk of the fund.

Mr Omar Selim, Arabesque Partners’ CEO said, “We are delighted to continue our strategic partnership with BIMB Invest with the launch of this local Fund. With its name inspired by X-Ray imaging, our proprietary sustainability monitoring tool, Arabesque S-Ray™, it enables us to look beyond a company’s surface and assess its extra financial performance. Our rules-based quantitative approach enables us to efficiently process billions of data points and remove human biases, with the objective of constructing an optimum portfolio relative to the risk. Through our systematic process, investors have full transparency on which companies we invest into and why. This approach aligns their personal values with the portfolio’s performance. Ultimately, we believe the integration of ESG data enables us to make more informed investment decisions.”

The Fund will invest in listed equities (up to 98% of the Fund‘s net asset value), of which at least 70% of the portfolio is allocated to companies in Malaysia, and up to 30% to foreign companies where the regulatory authorities are the ordinary or associate members of the International Organization of Securities Commission (“IOSCO”). The Fund invests through a rules-based investment process into listed companies that are compliant with the principles of the United Nations Global Compact (“UNGC”), Shariah compliant according to the Shariah Advisory Council of the Securities Commission (“SAC”), and Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions (“AAOIFI”) rulebooks.

The Fund is offered for subscription in the Malaysian Ringgit, US Dollar, Euro and Singapore Dollar at RM0.25, USD0.25, EUR0.25 and SGD0.25 per unit respectively, for 21 calendar days during the initial offer period, from 9 March 2017 till 29 March 2017. The minimum initial investment required for the Fund is RM500, USD500, EUR500 or SGD500. The target fund size is RM100 million over a one-year period. Offering greater ease to the investors, the Fund can be subscribed from any Bank Islam branches nationwide, BIMB Invest’s Unit Trust Consultants and Institutional Unit Trust Advisers (“IUTA”).
